Dear TCA Parents,
We are implementing a new summer reading expectation (in secondary):
- Students will read two books of their own choice, with parent permission
- Permission forms will be collected at the end of the school year, and given to the student's teacher for the following year
- Students may seek out recommendations from teachers, parents, and other adults
- Teachers will still intentionally encourage summer reading by taking time to help students choose books meaningful to them, and following-up relationally with them
For many years, secondary students have been assigned a list of for their summer reading books. While elementary students need guidance as they develop their minds and literary tastes, we believe that secondary students are capable of finding challenging, meaningful reading material on their own, and we have plans to help them find books they love before the summer. We want your children to choose books with joyful anticipation that reflect their interests and your family's values.
We believe this truly reflects TCA's core values, which asks students to "take ownership of and find joy in learning." We encourage students, with the assistance of their parents, to seek out their own challenges as they continue to become independent and life-long learners.
Students are motivated to read because of relationships with other readers such as their parents, friends, and mentors. Please consider reading with your child, as well as finding other resources to help them, particularly if your student chooses a challenging work. As a community that values Truth, Beauty, and Goodness, we should be reading more and scrolling less.
We are grateful to provide more opportunities for your child as they continue to grow into exemplary citizens, through reading with joy.
