Layne Witmer grew up in Tucson, Arizona.  After competing in volleyball, basketball and track at Salpointe Catholic High School, she was recruited to play volleyball at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  While pursuing a degree in psychology and a minor in exercise sports science from UNC,  she dedicated her first year of eligibility to volleyball.  Entering her sophomore year, Layne transitioned to crew and trained with the US National Rowing Team after her first season. Rowing her last three years at UNC, she concluded her career as a team captain and was voted to the All ACC team.  After graduating, she moved to Branson, Missouri to work with Kanakuk Kamps as a recruiter for future staff.  In 2004, she moved back to Tucson, to pursue a master’s degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Arizona and worked in Marketing and Alumni Relations for the athletics department at the university.  During this time, Layne started coaching volleyball at a local high school.  Following graduation from the U of A , she was hired as the Dean of Students and Assistant Athletic Director for Pusch Ridge Christian Academy.  Layne served as the varsity volleyball head coach for 6 years while working in administration at the school.  In 2008, she was selected as the 2A Coach of the Year for southern Arizona, and still enjoys relationships with the athletes she had the opportunity to coach.  In 2008, Layne met Doug Witmer, an Air Force officer stationed in Tucson.  They married in 2010 and started their Air Force adventure together, traveling and growing their family.  She has lived in 4 different states and overseas in Argentina. Layne has three children, two of whom are TCA Titans, with the third soon to join them.   Layne joined the TCA staff as a substitute teacher in 2021 and is now serving as the varsity volleyball coach at TCA.
