One of the many benefits of a classical education is the focus on the fine arts. Our community came together on Friday to admire the artwork produced by our student body. From pastels to watercolor, the halls were filled with beauty. Our students waited with anticipation to see the works of art revealed for the art show. One second grader walked past the “do not touch” sign and commented he could barely resist the need to look!

Similar to math and science, time spent in creating and studying art requires critical thinking, decision making, observation, and innovation. Art also enriches history, writing, and literature and aids in students’ ability to make connections to what has been taught. Participating in art class helps develop self-confidence and perseverance while strengthening fine motor skills.

Bringing art into your home is only a click away with the wonder of technology. Many art museums have a virtual walk that you can participate in which allows you to visit from the comfort of your home. Consider taking your child to the fine art museum or taking an art class. Examine one piece of art for as long as possible, and then talk about what you noticed. Try to recreate a piece of artwork or study an artist celebrating the beauty that has been created.
