Pikes Peak Region Hoopers Make it Rain: Several Athletes Reach 1,000-Point Mark

The Pikes Peak region had a plethora of hoopers reach the 1,000-point plateau this season.

Below is a list highlighting athletes who reached the mark and some notables from their careers and seasons.

Abbie Nickell, Peyton girls basketball

Date achieved: Jan. 25 vs. Fountain Valley

Insert a coin into the Peyton senior and watch the scoring machine go to work.

During her sophomore season, Nickell scored 20 points three times. As a junior she did so in eight games. In her senior campaign, Nickell has scored 20 or more nine times. In consecutive games in January, she set career-highs in points with 33 against Swallows Charter Academy and 35 against Fountain Valley to give her 1,000 for her career.

Despite averaging 20.2 points per game this season, Nickell is second on the Panthers in scoring and fifth in 3A.

Extra -- On socials: “It’s not only super special to have surpassed 1,000 career points, but it’s even more special to do it the same year as AJ (Mannering), who I have played basketball with since second grade.” Nickell on Facebook.

AJ Mannering, Peyton girls basketball

Date achieved: Dec. 19, 2023, vs. Simla

Not only did Mannering score her 1,000th career point this season, she’s flirting with a grand as a senior.

Mannering has 667 points in 20 games and averages 33.4, which is No.1 in Colorado and 12th in the nation.

The Panthers senior has scored 30 or more in 14 games including at least 31 points in her previous eight contests. The Air Force women’s basketball commit scored her 1,500th point Feb. 23 against Thomas MacLaren.

Peyton junior varsity coach, Ryan Green, said Mannering set the school record – boys and girls – with a 51-point outing against Rye on Feb. 12, eclipsing the old record, set in 2009 by Brett Green, by 3 points.

Extra – Peyton coach Brian Green: “She is such a driven competitor. She’s as hard a working player as I’ve ever coached in my 40 years coaching basketball.”

Alaina Bonacquista, The Classical Academy girls basketball

Date achieved: Feb. 6 vs. Falcon

Bonacquista averaged 6.7 points per game in 13 contests as a freshman on varsity.

As a senior, Bonacquista more than doubled her average to 17.8 points per game and scored 427 this year.

The Bethel University commit scored double digits in 22 of 24 games this year and dropped 27 in her prep finale, just 3 points shy of a new career high.

The Titans senior showed supreme confidence on the court as well. After scoring 8 points against Pueblo County on Jan. 5, Bonacquista bounced back with a season-high 26 points and scored 20 or more in four consecutive games.

Extra -- stats: Per The Classical Academy’s X page, Bonacquista became the first girls basketball player in TCA history to reach 1,000 points when she scored 16 in an overtime win against Falcon.

Brooklyn Stewart, Pine Creek girls basketball

Date achieved: Feb. 20 vs. Fossil Ridge

Stewart played just 13 games her freshman year after she broke her right leg midway through the season.

Not even that stymied the Eagles junior as she averaged 13.8 as a sophomore and 20.7 points per game this season.

Stewart also scored 519 in 25 games this year – 175 more points than her total scored as a sophomore.

In her final two games in 2023, Stewart scored in single digits in both contests. This season, Stewart never scored fewer than 12 and poured in 20 points in 16 contests.

Extra – Pine Creek coach Janean Jubic: “Her parents put in just as much time with her as we do and all the reps were noticeable this year. I couldn’t be prouder of Brooklyn. Where she was a year ago (until) now, she’s leaps and bounds better.”

Cameron Rowney, Vanguard boys basketball

Date achieved: Feb. 23 vs. Rye

Rowney averaged a respectable 12.7 points per game as a junior for the Coursers and scored 20 or more four times last season.

As a senior, Rowney morphed into a juggernaut and averages 19.9 per contest. Rowney has scored 20-plus points in 13 games including six in a row from Feb. 2 – Feb. 21.

In that streak’s finale, against Colorado Springs Christian, Rowney notched career highs in points (28) and 3-pointers (6).

Extra – stat: Edmondson ended his junior year with a 3-point make in six consecutive contests.

This season, he extended that streak to 27 with 3-pointers in the Rangers’ first 21 games.

Against Liberty on Jan. 24, Huxtable cooked the Lancers from beyond the arc and went 6-for-11 from deep.

Extra – stats: Huxtable played in just nine varsity games as a freshman but averaged 12.4 points and dropped a season-high 24 in her last game as a ninth grader.

Grace Minihane, Colorado Springs Christian School girls basketball

Date achieved: Dec. 12, 2023, vs. Ellicott

It’s hard to believe the Lions senior scored just 48 points as a freshman in nine varsity games.

Heck, during any three-game stretch in Minihane’s senior campaign she’s eclipsed that.

Minihane averages 26.5 points this season and, through 22 contests, she’s scored 582 and has eight games of 30 or more points.

After scoring 32 in back-to-back games to start the year, Minihane scored 119 points in three matchups against Florence, Rye and James Irwin in late January, an average of 39.6 points.

Wenger scored a season-high 35 points twice this year – against Elizabeth and Cañon City.

During the Titans’ game against the Tigers, Wenger scored 35 of the Titans’ 60 points, which was 58 percent of TCA’s output.

Extra – stats: Even though Wenger scored 35 twice this season, that did not represent his career high. As a junior, Wenger scored 46 against Coronado and drained 16 free throws for the Titans in an 85-73 victory.

Kenny Jones, Harrison boys basketball

Date achieved: Jan. 27 vs. Sierra

Jones could cook a team for 20-plus and barely change facial expressions while watching the ball swish through the net.

Jones opened the year with 27, 26 and 33 points – 28.6 points per game – and closed the regular season with 32 and 40 – 36 per contest.

Jones also played efficient ball and shot over 50 percent in 13 games this season.

Leekaya Burke-Perryman, Pine Creek girls basketball

Date achieved: Feb. 15 vs. Doherty

At 5-foot-3, Burke-Perryman is the shortest player on the list of hoopers to score 1,000 points this season.

While Burke-Perryman isn’t the tallest tree in the forest, the Pine Creek junior is the embodiment of “heart over height.”

Burke-Perryman has averaged double figures in all three seasons on varsity and averaged 14.2 points in 26 games as a freshman, which led the Eagles.

As a junior, Burke-Perryman averaged 14.5 in 25 games, scored a career-high 32 points against Valor Christian and knocked down 6 of 7 3-point attempts in the game.

This year, the St. Mary’s senior poured in 17.9 points and had 20 or more in eight of the Pirates’ first 15 games.

Extra – stats: After going scoreless against Colorado Springs Christian on Feb. 2, Salveson scored 25 and 38, the best two-game stretch of her career.

Noah Hellem, Air Academy boys basketball

Date achieved: Feb. 14 vs. Lutheran

Although the Kadet boys had a rough season and tough ending to the year, Hellem wrapped his career in remarkable fashion.

The Fort Lewis College commit capped his senior year with 17 against Lutheran and scored his 1,000th point in his final game for Air Academy.

In his senior campaign, Hellem tallied 489 points in 23 games and averaged 21.3, nearly 7 points better than his junior season where he scored 14.8 per contest.

As a junior, Hellem scored 20 or more four times, but in his final year, Hellem hit 20-plus in nine of Air Academy’s first 11 games and 14 times overall.

Smith scored 20 or more in 10 of Coronado’s 23 games and hit double figures in all but two contests this season.

Extra – stats: Smith hit a pair of buzzer beaters against Harrison this season. In his first game-winner, Smith lone 3-pointer of the game gave the Cougars the victory. The next, Smith took the show on the road and hit a shot as time expired to give Coronado the win over the Panthers.

Tevin Riehl, Mesa Ridge boys basketball

Date achieved: Jan. 8 vs. Coronado

Since his sophomore season, Riehl has led the Grizzlies in points per game and hasn’t cooled off since.

The Grizzlies’ scoring machine averages a career-best 18.8 points and has reached double figures in all but one contest this season.

In Mesa Ridge’s last 19 games, Riehl has scored at least 12 and, during that streak, he’s poured in 20 or more 10 times.
